Maritime Operator Urges Reopening of Land Borders for Vehicle Imports
Alhaji Adetona Mubashiru, chairman of Only God is Wise Nigeria Limited, has asked the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service to review the 2017 ban on vehicle imports through land borders. He says the policy has not met its goals. Instead, it has driven smugglers onto bush paths and cut government revenue as many traders reroute through neighbouring countries. Mubashiru notes that an electronic cargo-tracking system has been proposed and that the Seme border now has space for over 1,000 vehicles. He says earlier concerns about limited parking are no longer an issue. He argues that reopening land borders would lower import costs, boost trade and create jobs for mechanics, painters, panel beaters and drivers. He urges the Customs leadership to advise government to consult stakeholders and align with global trade practices.
