Why Always Turning the Other Cheek Can Be Dangerous
During my NYSC in Ikere-Ekiti, I learned a hard lesson from a landlady who forgave her goat thief instead of seeking justice. She lost her livelihood because she never held the thief accountable. That misplaced mercy left her dependent and vulnerable. True wisdom is knowing when to demand justice and when to show mercy. Standing up for yourself doesn’t always mean violence—it means protecting your rights. Forgiveness only makes sense after wrongs are acknowledged and corrected. Otherwise, you risk repeating the cycle of loss.
