Saving the Leader’s Ship: Restoring Accountability in Nigerian Politics

Leadership should be about service to people, yet many politicians today focus on party loyalty over genuine impact. This piece argues that true leadership spans politics, organisations and associations, and must be revived across all spheres. Politics has drifted from its service mission. Leaders often promise roads, electricity and security without explaining how they will deliver. We need plans grounded in the 80/20 rule—targeting a few high-impact issues that bring immediate relief. Nigeria’s energy crisis, fuel shortages and insecurity stem from failed governance and selective justice. Renaming monuments for ego only deepens public distrust. Corruption persists when accountability is absent. Regular salary reviews, better pay for health and education workers and a commitment to honesty can reverse brain drain. True accountability will rescue our sinking leadership ship. We all share the responsibility to demand and rebuild effective governance.
