Nigeria has warned against using force to settle political disputes in Niger Republic after reports of an attempted coup involving soldiers within the ruling military junta. Gunfire and explosions were reported in Niamey early Saturday after attackers reportedly targeted Diori Hamani International Airport, which shares facilities with an air force base and a major military installation. The assailants were also said to have attempted to breach security around the presidential palace. The Federal Government said instability in Niger would directly affect Nigeria, the wider ECOWAS region and the Sahel. It called on Nigerien authorities to pursue an inclusive process that restores peace, stability and constitutional order.
