Over 3,100 Nigerians Evacuated from Sudan War, but Fate of Many Still Unknown
Since April 2023, more than 3,100 Nigerians have returned home after the outbreak of fighting in Sudan. Federal Government and IOM records show a total of 3,108 citizens were evacuated via emergency and humanitarian flights. The first phase in April and May 2023 saw 2,518 people airlifted on 15 special government flights. Four departed from Aswan and 11 from Port Sudan after dangerous journeys through conflict zones. A later IOM programme flew 590 more Nigerians back in 2025 and 2026. Officials warn the true number rescued may be higher, as some made their own way out or left undocumented. But they have no verified count of those who remain trapped across Khartoum, Darfur and other war-torn regions. Returnees have received medical care, counselling and reintegration support. Yet uncertainty persists over how many of our citizens are still stranded as the conflict shows no sign of ending.
