Iliana Yotova Elected Bulgaria’s First Female President
Iliana Yotova has won Bulgaria’s presidential runoff election, becoming the first woman elected to the country’s highest political office. Near-final results released on November 2 showed Yotova winning 57.58 per cent of the vote with her running mate, Kiril Valchev. Their opposition rivals, former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov and Georgi Kandev, received 39.47 per cent. Yotova had been acting president since January 2026, following former President Rumen Radev’s resignation. She previously served as vice-president under Radev and was also a member of the European Parliament.
