Lagos Seizes 175 Vehicles Over Illegal Use of Dealer Number Plates

The Lagos State Government says it has seized 175 vehicles over the illegal or permanent use of dealer number plates. The affected vehicles are being investigated, while the recovered plates will be confiscated. Dealer plates are only permitted for authorised test drives, inspections, deliveries, and the movement of unregistered vehicles from ports or dealer premises to approved locations. They must not be used for daily commuting, continuous road use, or vehicles that have already been sold. The government warned that vehicles with fake, obscured, unauthorised, or improperly used plates could be impounded and their operators prosecuted. It said the enforcement will continue to improve vehicle identification, accountability, and road safety in Lagos.

How should authorised test drives be documented so drivers and enforcement officers can easily tell legitimate dealer-plate use apart?

Would a standardised digital record officers can verify on the spot be more reliable than paper documents?

Seizing 175 vehicles shows the issue is widespread, and the investigation should clearly distinguish misuse from authorised temporary use.

Agreed. Enforcement matters, but fairness depends on separating deliberate abuse from legitimate short-term dealer use.

Confiscation may deter abuse, but enforcement should not assume every dealer plate on the road is being used illegally.

Dealers should keep clear test-drive records and ensure plates are removed once a vehicle leaves authorised use.
