Nigerian Teachers Speak on Low Pay, Unsafe Schools and the Struggles Behind Teachers’ Day
Teachers across Nigeria say World Teachers’ Day celebrations do not erase the daily challenges they face in classrooms. Educators in Oyo, Rivers, Lagos, Abuja, Ogun and Ondo spoke about low pay, delayed promotions, heavy workloads, overcrowded classes and a lack of basic learning materials. Some teachers said they regularly spend personal money on classroom supplies and student activities. Others called for better welfare, regular professional training and clearer career progression, especially as curricula and teaching methods continue to change. Safety also remains a major concern. Teachers in Oyo recalled the disruption caused by school abductions and the subsequent strike, while FCT teachers have raised concerns over promotion policies. Many respondents said improving teachers’ working conditions is essential to restoring students’ confidence in education and strengthening Nigeria’s schools.
