UNIZIK Marks World Drug Day, Calls for Prevention and Tech-Driven Responses
The War Against Drug Abuse Club at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, marked the 2026 World Drug Day with a call for stronger prevention, treatment and innovative responses to substance abuse. Speakers at the event warned that drug abuse threatens young people, public health, peace and national development. They urged stakeholders to treat substance-use disorders as health concerns, not only criminal matters, in order to reduce stigma and improve access to care. A psychology lecturer highlighted the growing danger of low-cost synthetic drugs and noted that countries are using tools such as artificial intelligence, digital support platforms and telehealth to tackle trafficking and expand recovery services. The programme also featured the inauguration of student faculty representatives, a quiz competition and awards for anti-drug-abuse advocates.
