IBAN Threatens to Boycott Wike’s Press Briefings Unless He Apologises
The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria has urged FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to retract his threat against Channels TV host Seun Okinbaloye and issue a public apology. The call follows Wike’s live comment that he would have “shot” the journalist if he could break the screen. IBAN warned that such rhetoric is inappropriate for a public official and could intimidate media practitioners. The association highlighted Nigeria’s press freedom challenges, noting the country ranks 122nd out of 180 on the global index. The statement, signed by IBAN chairman Ahmed Ramalan and acting general secretary Fidelis Duker, demands retraction and apology within a reasonable period. Otherwise, all independent broadcast stations will suspend coverage of the minister’s briefings and interviews. IBAN says the boycott aims to protect journalists and discourage violent language, while keeping the door open for constructive dialogue with public officials.
