Israel Says Gaza Mosque Strike Targeted Hamas Weapons Store

The Israeli military says it struck the Al-Muttaqin Mosque in Gaza City after alleging that Hamas used the building to store weapons. It said civilians were warned before the strike. Images from the area showed fire and heavy smoke near tents sheltering displaced Palestinians. Residents were seen searching the rubble for survivors and personal belongings. The attack happened despite a ceasefire that has been in place since October 2025. Gaza’s religious affairs authorities condemned the strike, denied the Israeli claim and said the mosque was completely destroyed. UNESCO has reported widespread damage to cultural sites in Gaza, including places of worship, since the war began in October 2023.
