Shettima Says Nigeria Will Target Food Self-Sufficiency and Plant 20 Billion Trees
Vice President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria plans to strengthen food self-sufficiency through mechanisation, climate-smart farming, high-yield seeds and modern agricultural practices. During a visit to farms and agricultural facilities in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, he said heavy dependence on imported food could weaken a country’s sovereignty. He urged stronger agricultural cooperation between Nigeria and Ethiopia, describing Ethiopia’s progress in wheat, fruit and coffee production as a model worth studying. Shettima also said Nigeria intends to begin a 20-billion-tree planting campaign in the next rainy season. He said the initiative would support environmental restoration, create jobs and draw lessons from Ethiopia’s large-scale tree-planting programme. The vice president visited wheat, banana and papaya farms as part of the tour.
