Activist: 18-Year-Old Chisom Was Never Legally Married to Her Abuser

Human rights campaigner Harrison Gwamnishu says 18-year-old Chisom’s so-called marriage was invalid. He explains that she was only 15 when her abuser allegedly paid a stranger in Anambra State to deliver her without her father’s consent. No customary rites were observed and no legal paperwork was filed. Gwamnishu stresses that there was never a valid union and that Chisom is not recognized as his wife in any form. Chisom is now under the care of the Lagos State Ministry for Women Affairs. Authorities and the activist continue to ensure her safety and wellbeing.
