Is Abuja’s Rapid Development Making Flooding Worse Under Wike?
Heavy rainfall on August 15 flooded parts of Wuse 2, Gudu and Lokogoma, leaving roads, vehicles and residents stranded. The flooding came despite earlier warnings from weather and hydrological agencies that the FCT faced significant flood risks this rainy season. Abuja’s master plan set aside wetlands, green belts and natural waterways to absorb stormwater. However, environmental advocates say development on green areas, blocked channels, poor waste disposal and drainage systems that cannot cope with rapid urban growth are increasing the city’s vulnerability. Wike did not create Abuja’s flood risk, but as FCT Minister since 2023, he is responsible for the administration overseeing planning, infrastructure and enforcement. With ecological-fund disbursements and repeated promises to restore the master plan, residents deserve clarity on whether drainage, waterways and green spaces are being adequately protected.
