Kaduna Man Accuses Sheikh Gumi of Interfering in Marriage as Cleric Denies Claim
A Kaduna resident, Nasiru Musa Idris, has accused Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of interfering in his marriage and preventing security agencies from investigating the whereabouts of his Moroccan wife. Idris alleged that his wife has been under the cleric's custody for about 11 months. He said he married her in Morocco with her family's consent and obtained the required Nigerian and Moroccan documentation. According to him, the dispute began after Gumi requested an additional Sharia Court marriage certificate and later offered to counsel the woman. Gumi has denied keeping the woman or meddling in the marriage. He said he plans to sue Idris for defamation. An aide to the cleric said the woman independently sought Gumi's help over a personal issue and that the allegations against him are false.
