Meg Avon, 30, marked her third wedding anniversary with England's River Avon by celebrating a major environmental campaign victory. She symbolically married the river in 2023 and adopted its name to draw attention to water pollution and the need to protect waterways. Bath and North East Somerset Council has unanimously endorsed a charter recognising the river's rights to exist, flow sustainably and remain free from pollution. The charter also calls for protection of native species and for advocates to speak on the river's behalf. The We Are Avon campaign is urging other councils along the 83-mile river to adopt similar measures. The group says it has recruited 120 river guardians to monitor the waterway and surrounding landscape.
