London Non-League Goalkeeper Reportedly Chosen as Next King of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom
George Desmond Kamurasi, a 36-year-old goalkeeper and captain of south-east London side SE Dons, has reportedly been selected to become the next Omukama of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom. The reported selection follows the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. Tooro is one of Uganda’s traditional monarchies and has cultural influence rather than formal political authority. Kamurasi, a British national, would be expected to leave his family life and grassroots football career in London to lead a kingdom with an estimated population of 800,000. Reports say the decision has drawn mixed reactions, while declining the throne is considered a serious cultural taboo.
