Nigeria Needs a Modern Football Stadium Built for the Fans
I saw MC Alger’s stadium and it looks like a modern European football ground. It made me wonder why Nigeria still struggles to provide a truly world-class stadium for football. Lagos is renovating a stadium mainly used as a training ground, while the Godswill Akpabio Stadium and Abuja Stadium now feel outdated. Senegal, Kenya and Cameroon have built newer facilities, while Morocco and South Africa are even further ahead. Why can’t Lagos build an 80,000-capacity football stadium without a running track? Most of our stadiums seem better suited for political rallies than football. Since I started following football in 2022, it feels like much of Africa has moved ahead of Nigeria in stadium development. In my view, Ghana is the only country Nigeria currently does better than in this area.
