Nigerian-Bulgarian Boxer Joana Nwamerue Says Racist Attacks Led Her Into Boxing
Nigerian-Bulgarian professional boxer Joana Nwamerue says racist attacks she and her brother faced while growing up in Bulgaria pushed them to learn self-defence. She said their mother enrolled them in kickboxing and taekwondo after warning that she could not always protect them. Nwamerue and her brother later became champions in both sports before she moved into professional boxing. Nwamerue, who says she has won all seven of her professional bouts by knockout, is preparing to face Jaica Green in Atlantic City. She began her professional career in 2019, paused during the COVID-19 period, and resumed fully in 2022. Now based in Las Vegas, she says regular sparring with leading female fighters has improved her career. She also described herself as an actress, dancer and entrepreneur.
