Why Rising Rent Is Pushing Young Nigerians Out of Independent Living

For many young Nigerians, getting a job no longer guarantees independence. Rising rent, yearly upfront payments and extra charges are making decent housing difficult to afford. In Lagos, Abuja and other job centres, workers must choose between costly homes near work and cheaper accommodation far away. Lower rent can quickly be cancelled out by transport fares, long commutes and lost time. The advertised rent is often only part of the cost. Agency, legal, caution and service fees can make moving in far more expensive, forcing young workers to borrow, share apartments or remain with family. Affordable housing, better urban planning and realistic housing finance are needed. Young Nigerians should not have to spend nearly all their income just to keep a roof over their heads.
