Stakeholders Urge State Police, Stronger Vigilantes at “Together for a Safer Anambra” Dialogue
Calls for expedited creation of State Police and stronger support for local vigilante groups dominated the “Together for a Safer Anambra” security dialogue in Awka. The event, part of the DIG’s operational tour, brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, security agencies and civil society to discuss cult violence, herders’ activities and other threats. The DIG emphasised focusing on specific offences—murder, armed robbery and kidnapping—over group affiliations. Participants urged improved police response times, youth engagement programmes and better training and equipment for community-based security outfits. Representatives of the NSCDC, vigilante leaders and cattle breeders all called for deeper collaboration, timely intelligence sharing and constitutional processes for State Police. The session ended with a commitment to strengthen community–police partnerships across Anambra.
