Escalating Attacks: Fulani Bandits Kidnap and Kill Yoruba Traditional Rulers
Traditional rulers across North Central and Southwest Nigeria face a growing wave of kidnappings and killings by Fulani armed militias. The recent abduction of the Odo-Oriya monarch in Ondo and repeated palace raids in Kwara have sent shockwaves through Yoruba communities. More than 30 chiefs have fled their palaces in fear. Victims include Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, who died in captivity, Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole who was killed while his wife was kidnapped, and Oba Israel Adeusi, the Olufon of Ifon, who was murdered. Several others—like the Ojibara of Bayegun Ile, Oba Kamilu Salami, and Oba Simeon Olanipekun of Aafin—were released after ransom payments. Some monarchs, including the Alara of Ara, escaped attacks, but many remain displaced or in hiding. Striking kings sends a clear message of terror. Communities are abandoning farms and markets, and local economies are collapsing under the weight of fear.
