Sowore Condemns Reported Cleansing of TikToker Who Filmed Oloolu Masquerade in Ibadan
Activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the reported traditional cleansing of Wasilat, a TikToker accused of filming the Oloolu masquerade during its recent procession in Ibadan, Oyo State. Wasilat was accused of disguising herself as a man to record the masquerade, despite restrictions barring women from seeing or filming it. Reports said she later underwent a cleansing ritual conducted by shrine custodians. Videos circulating online appeared to show her hair being shaved during the process. Sowore said culture is important but argued that any tradition that is oppressive, discriminatory or harmful to human dignity should be abandoned. He described the reported treatment of the young woman as abuse and called for respect for human rights.
