Sanwo-Olu Says African Cities Must Lead Investment and Economic Growth

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says African cities must take a leading role in driving investment, infrastructure development and job creation as the continent’s urban population expands. Speaking at an Africa business summit in Washington, DC, Sanwo-Olu presented Lagos as an example of city-led growth. He said Lagos contributes more than a quarter of Nigeria’s economic output, with internally generated revenue projected above ₦3 trillion this year. The governor highlighted the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Dangote Refinery, rail projects and water transport plans as major infrastructure investments. He also said Lagos aims to grow into a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2052. Sanwo-Olu received the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize at the event and urged investors to assess African cities individually, with attention to governance and economic potential.
