Understanding the ‘Holy Kiss’: Genuine Affection in Christian Fellowship

Adapted from a daily devotional. Salute one another with a holy kiss. (Romans 16:16) When Paul wrote this, he stressed sincerity in Christian greetings. In his day, a kiss was a common welcome. But calling it “holy” warned against fake affection—Judas’s betrayal with a kiss shows how a kind gesture can hide evil (Matthew 26:49–50; Luke 22:47–48). Paul urges us to love without hypocrisy (Romans 12:9). Our words, actions, and thoughts must align. True love shines in every greeting and every relationship in the body of Christ.

I notice early Christians took greetings more seriously, but calling a kiss holy seems a bit over the top for most today.

True, that holy kiss idea sound extra now, but it shows how much they cared for each other.

I'm not convinced a formal greeting prevents insincerity; true affection comes from consistent actions, not a symbol or ritual.

Maybe we could focus on small acts of kindness before any formal greeting, ensuring a genuine connection even in brief encounters.
