Court Views Interrogation Video in Trial Over Killing of Arise News Journalist

An FCT High Court in Jabi, Abuja, has viewed part of a police interrogation video in the trial of 11 defendants accused of armed robbery and the deaths of Arise News journalist Somtochukwu Maduagwu and security guard Barnabas Danlami. The video, played in court through a prosecution witness, contained statements by two defendants about the September 2025 robbery at Unique Apartments in Katampe. One defendant allegedly said the group carried weapons, fired at the security guard and took valuables, including a vehicle. He also gave an account of how Maduagwu fell from the building that differed from earlier police testimony. During cross-examination, the police witness said he could not recall some dates and details surrounding the arrests and recorded statements. He confirmed that no lawyers or relatives were present during the recordings, while residents who testified earlier said they could not identify the masked intruders. All 11 defendants have pleaded not guilty and remain in custody. The case was adjourned until December 9 for the continuation of cross-examination.
