How Do You Keep Your Child Hydrated During School Hours?
Keeping children hydrated during the school day supports their energy, concentration and overall wellbeing. Pack a labelled reusable water bottle that your child can open easily, and ensure it is filled before they leave home. Encourage them to take small sips regularly instead of waiting until they are very thirsty. Water should be the main drink, while sugary soft drinks and heavily sweetened beverages should be limited. Water-rich foods such as watermelon, oranges, pineapple and cucumber can also help. Children may need extra fluids after sports, PE or outdoor activities, especially in hot weather. Teach them to recognise signs of dehydration, including thirst, dry mouth, headache, tiredness and dark-coloured urine. Find out whether your child can refill their bottle at school and has reasonable opportunities to drink water. If the bottle often returns home nearly full, gently remind them to drink more during the day.
