Lagos Calls for Stronger Investment in Girls’ Education and an End to Child Marriage
The Lagos State Government marked the International Day of the Girl Child with a renewed call to protect girls from child marriage and expand their access to quality education, mentorship and opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. At an event held at the Lagos State University of Education in Oto-Ijanikin, officials and education stakeholders urged parents, teachers and communities to support girls’ ambitions and safeguard their rights. Speakers said girls should have equal opportunities to learn, build digital and vocational skills, and pursue careers without discrimination. The programme also featured sensitisation sessions on domestic and sexual violence, health and hygiene. Organisers highlighted Lagos initiatives including STEAM mentorship programmes and alternative secondary education for girls whose schooling has been disrupted by poverty, early marriage or teenage pregnancy.
