INEC Records 6.88 Million New Voters as 2027 Registration Closes

INEC Records 6.88 Million New Voters as 2027 Registration Closes

INEC says it has recorded 6,885,330 prospective voters across the three phases of its Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections. The exercise, extended beyond its initial July 10 deadline, is due to close on July 26, 2026. The figure remains provisional, as biometric checks and the removal of duplicate registrations are still underway. INEC expects to publish the provisional register in August, allowing Nigerians to verify their details and submit claims or objections before a final total is announced. Kano recorded the highest number of new registrations, followed by Lagos, Sokoto, Imo and Osun. Young people aged 18 to 34 formed the largest group of registrants, while women accounted for a slight majority in the latest phase. The North West recorded the highest total across the geopolitical zones. Experts say the larger voter register will only strengthen democracy if registered Nigerians turn out to vote in 2027. They also called for thorough register cleanup and stronger voter education campaigns.

Do we know whether the increase reflects broader participation or simply more people becoming eligible to register?

Nearly 6.9 million prospective voters is a notable level of participation before the 2027 elections.

The headline figure matters, but registration totals alone do not tell us how many will eventually vote.
