Body of Benchers Plans Tighter Limits on Law Admissions as 6,010 Are Called to Bar

The Body of Benchers says it will introduce stricter controls on admission into Nigeria’s legal profession, citing concerns that unchecked enrolment is weakening standards and worsening unemployment among young lawyers. At the July Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja, where 6,010 Nigerian Law School graduates were admitted, the body said some universities admit law students above their approved quotas. It said this contributes to backlogs at the Nigerian Law School, with some graduates waiting years for admission. The Body of Benchers has set up a committee to recommend yearly limits for candidates called to the Bar. It also plans to keep detailed university admission records and monitor compliance with approved quotas. The regulator stressed that the measures are not intended to deny qualified graduates access to legal training, but to protect the quality of legal education and professional practice in Nigeria.
