FG Opens Talks With Energy China on Phased Revival of Mambilla Power Project

The Federal Government has begun discussions with China Energy Engineering Corporation, also known as Energy China, on reviving the long-delayed Mambilla hydropower project. One option under consideration is developing the project in phases to make delivery more practical. Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said the talks follow Nigeria’s recent win in an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration linked to the project. The ruling removed a major legal obstacle arising from years of contractual disputes involving the proposed 3,050MW plant in Taraba State. The government is also pursuing wider power-sector investments, including transmission upgrades, the Presidential Power Initiative, the Zungeru evacuation project and plans for local power-equipment manufacturing. Grid stabilisation work is expected to focus on the Lagos, Enugu–Port Harcourt and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridors.
