UK Man Claiming to Be a Vampire Detained After Leaving Dead Animals Outside Churches — 1 of 2

A Hampshire man who claimed to be a vampire has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act after admitting offences linked to disturbing displays of dead animals outside churches. Benjamin Lewis, 48, admitted five counts of religiously aggravated harassment and two theft counts. Between February and August last year, he killed deer and stole lambs before leaving animal remains, inverted crosses and tarot cards at four churches. The incidents left church members and residents in the New Forest fearful. Police found animal blood in Lewis’s vehicle, while searches of his home uncovered drawings and items linked to his beliefs about drinking animal blood. A forensic psychiatrist told the court Lewis has several mental health and developmental conditions and may pose a risk of escalation. The judge said the offences would normally merit a substantial prison term, but ordered indefinite hospital treatment instead.
