Italy Approves New Electoral System Ahead of 2027 General Election
Italy’s Chamber of Deputies has approved a major electoral reform ahead of the country’s 2027 general election. The law was backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government and passed by 227 votes to 164. The reform replaces the current mixed system with proportional representation. A coalition that wins more than 42 per cent of the vote can receive bonus seats to help it secure a working majority in parliament. The bonus could add up to 70 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 35 in the Senate. Parties and coalitions must also name their preferred prime minister before the election, although the president retains the constitutional power to appoint the prime minister. Supporters say the changes will improve political stability. Opposition parties argue that the law could limit voter choice and favour the governing coalition, and they plan to challenge parts of it in the Constitutional Court.
