Basketball Guide: Personal Fouls, Technical Fouls and Free Throws
A personal foul occurs when a player makes illegal physical contact that unfairly disadvantages an opponent. It can be committed by either defensive or offensive players. Depending on the situation, the fouled player may receive possession or free throws. Technical fouls cover non-contact rule violations and unsportsmanlike conduct. They can lead to one or two free throws, while repeated or serious offences may result in disqualification. Teams that exceed the foul limit in a quarter or half put their opponents in the bonus, meaning later non-shooting fouls can attract free throws. A player fouled while shooting receives free throws based on the value of the attempted shot. If the basket still goes in, the player gets one extra free throw for an “and-one” play.
