My Ranking of Nigeria’s Leaders From Independence to Today

I ranked Nigeria’s national leaders from independence to the present, including military rulers, civilian presidents and the interim government. I assessed each administration on economic management, infrastructure, education and healthcare, security, governance, corruption and long-term legacy. My top three are Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian administration, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Murtala Mohammed. I credit Obasanjo with major economic and institutional reforms, Yar’Adua with a strong rule-of-law record and the Niger Delta amnesty, and Murtala with bold anti-corruption and state-creation reforms despite his short tenure. Goodluck Jonathan ranks highly for accepting defeat and supporting Nigeria’s democratic transition. Abdulsalami Abubakar also deserves credit for returning the country to civilian rule. I rate Babangida lower because of the June 12 annulment, while Buhari’s two governments are weighed down by authoritarianism, economic hardship and insecurity. Tinubu’s score is provisional because his presidency is still ongoing. His reforms targeted fuel subsidies and foreign-exchange distortions, but many Nigerians have faced severe economic hardship. I place Sani Abacha near the bottom because repression, human-rights abuses and corruption outweigh his government’s infrastructure and economic claims. Leadership records should also be judged in context, since each leader inherited a different Nigeria. How would you rank them?
