UN Special Representative Flags Worsening Insecurity in Nigeria and the Sahel at Security Council
The UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel briefed Council members on the Secretary-General’s latest report covering November 2025 to June 2026. He warned that terrorist and armed groups in northern Nigeria and the central Sahel are adapting tactics with drones and cryptocurrencies. Between January 1 and February 10, a Boko Haram splinter group alone killed 170 civilians in Kwara, contributing to over 1,250 deaths in that period. Despite the alarming violence, the briefing also highlighted progress: renewed momentum for dialogue, peaceful elections in four countries, and steps toward accountable governance. The US envoy echoed calls for regional coordination and stronger preventive diplomacy to counter cross-border threats.
