Puerto Rican Boxing Great Wilfredo ‘Bazooka’ Gomez Dies at 69
The boxing world is mourning Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gomez, the Puerto Rican three-weight world champion, who died at 69 after reportedly spending two weeks in hospital with respiratory complications. Gomez won 44 of his 48 professional fights, recording 42 knockouts. He held world titles at super-bantamweight, featherweight and super-featherweight, and made 17 consecutive successful super-bantamweight title defences, all by knockout. His landmark 1978 victory over previously unbeaten Mexican fighter Carlos Zarate remains one of boxing’s most celebrated performances. Gomez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995 and is remembered as one of Puerto Rico’s greatest sporting figures.
