How I Grew and Harvested Turmeric in a Paint Bucket
I bought fresh turmeric rhizomes from Mile 1 Market in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with the aim of growing my own at home. I used some to make turmeric powder, then selected the healthiest remaining pieces for planting. Because the rhizomes were dry, I soaked them in clean water until they developed sprouting eyes after about two weeks. I planted them in a perforated plastic paint bucket to allow proper drainage. I also planted ginger nearby and noticed that the turmeric grew more slowly. After about nine months, the leaves turned brown and withered, showing that it was time to harvest. I dug through the soil, washed the turmeric rhizomes and was pleased with my first container-grown harvest. The yield was modest, but it showed that turmeric can be grown successfully in a small space at home.
