Edo Begins Seizure of Banned Sachet Alcohol in Benin

The Edo State Government has begun enforcing the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks in Benin City. Officials of the Edo Consumer Protection Committee inspected shops and seized alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and plastic bottles below 200ml. The committee said the exercise is meant to protect consumers, especially children who can easily access the products. It also aims to remove fake, adulterated and potentially harmful drinks from circulation. Some traders protested the seizures, citing possible business losses. During the operation, officials also arrested a beans wholesaler accused of using insecticide to preserve beans, warning that the practice poses a serious public health risk. The nationwide ban was announced by NAFDAC, which directed manufacturers to stop producing the affected products and begin recalling them.
