Prue Leith: The Bake Off Judge’s Career, Family and Marriages

Dame Prue Leith is best known to many viewers as a judge on The Great British Bake Off, but her career began long before television. Born in Cape Town in 1940, she moved to London in 1960, trained at the Cordon Bleu cookery school and built a name as a chef, restaurateur, author and broadcaster. In 1975, she founded Leiths School of Food and Wine, which became a respected institution for professional cookery training. She later spent 11 years judging The Great British Menu before joining Bake Off in 2017. Leith was married to South African writer and property developer Rayne Kruger from 1974 until his death in 2002. They had two children, Danny and Li-Da. In 2016, she married retired clothes designer John Playfair, and the couple later made their home in the Cotswolds. Her television fame reflects only one part of a career that has spanned food education, restaurants, publishing and broadcasting for more than six decades.
