Lagos Records Six Confirmed Diphtheria Cases, Urges Parents to Complete Vaccination
The Lagos State Government says there is no widespread diphtheria outbreak in the state, despite recording 53 suspected cases and six laboratory-confirmed infections in 2026. All confirmed cases have been treated, while contacts were traced and placed under observation. Residents are advised to seek medical care immediately for symptoms such as severe sore throat, fever, weakness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, neck swelling, or a white or grey membrane in the throat. The state warned against self-medication, especially for people who recently travelled to affected areas or had contact with a confirmed case. Health officials said vaccination remains the strongest protection. Parents and guardians are urged to ensure children complete the free three-dose pentavalent vaccine schedule at six, 10 and 14 weeks. Routine immunisation is available at more than 1,000 public and private health facilities across Lagos. Suspected cases can be managed at Mainland Hospital, Massey Street Children’s Hospital, LUTH and LASUTH. Residents are also advised to practise good respiratory hygiene and avoid close contact when experiencing respiratory symptoms.
