Police Bar Amotekun and Vigilantes From Osun Governorship Election Security

Police Bar Amotekun and Vigilantes From Osun Governorship Election Security — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 11, says Amotekun, vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch outfits and other unauthorised security bodies must not take part in security operations for the August 15 Osun governorship election. The police said only constitutionally recognised security agencies will provide security before, during and after the poll. Personnel deployed for election duty must wear approved uniforms and be properly identified. The command warned that anyone who performs unauthorised security duties, intimidates voters or officials, or violates electoral laws will be arrested and prosecuted. Residents, parties and candidates were urged to cooperate with INEC and security agencies.

I agree, clear coordination is important so security around polling areas remains orderly and people know who is authorised.

This decision puts a clear line around election security, but residents may still be watching closely for reassurance on the day.

Restricting unauthorised groups makes sense, though simply barring them will not answer concerns about adequate coverage across Osun.

The police should clearly publish approved security arrangements and reporting channels before August 15, so voters know where to seek help.
