Understanding the Great Tribulation in Matthew 24
Many readers misinterpret Matthew 24 by starting at verse 1. They assume the events unfold in sequence from the chapter’s beginning. This view overlooks the true beginning of the great tribulation. Verses 15–21 mark the start of this prophecy. Jesus refers to Daniel’s abomination of desolation and urges those in Judea to flee to the mountains. He warns of dire hardships, especially for pregnant women and nursing mothers, and advises us to pray that our escape avoids winter or the Sabbath. Everything that follows—war, famine, pestilence, displacement, and slavery—constitutes the great tribulation.
