Access to Free HIV Tests and Antiretroviral Drugs Appears to Be Getting Harder

HIV awareness and free testing once seemed more accessible, with health agencies and non-governmental organisations offering sensitisation programmes in hospitals, churches and workplaces. Recently, accessing a routine HIV test at my local general hospital became more difficult. I was asked to open a hospital card, wait in the general queue and get a doctor’s referral before the laboratory could attend to me. I am also concerned by reports that some people living with HIV struggle to get antiretroviral drugs. Preventive medicines are costly for many people, so reliable testing, treatment and prevention services should remain easy to access.
