44 Specialists Begin 15-Hour Surgery to Separate Tanzanian Conjoined Twins in Riyadh
A 44-member medical team has begun a complex operation in Riyadh to separate two-year-old Tanzanian conjoined twins, Laitience and Loveness. The twins, who arrived in Saudi Arabia on January 27, are joined at the pelvis and hips. They share parts of their lower intestines, spine and spinal cord. Doctors carried out months of skin-expansion treatment to prepare them for the procedure. The operation at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital is planned in nine stages and is expected to last about 15 hours. The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme estimates a 70 per cent chance of success. This is the programme’s 75th separation operation since 1990 and its fourth involving twins from Tanzania.
