Prominent Leaders Warn Nigeria Is at a Dangerous Crossroads

Former INEC chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, ex-Chief of Staff Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Malam Kabiru Yusuf and other respected Nigerians have issued a joint statement warning of a deepening national crisis. Their June 8 declaration highlights rising insecurity, electoral manipulation and the weakening of democratic institutions. They allege the legislature and judiciary are increasingly subordinated to the executive, fueling public distrust and impunity. Linking Nigeria’s security challenges to instability in the Sahel, they call on the government to appoint a Special Envoy for the region. They also urge civil society, professional bodies and religious leaders to defend democratic values and ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
