FG Pushes Digital Advisory Services to Help Farmers Boost Food Production
The Federal Government has urged African countries to treat agricultural extension services as critical infrastructure for improving farm productivity and food security. At the Africa Agribusiness Extension Summit in Abuja, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari said Africa cannot feed its projected population of 2.5 billion by 2050 by expanding farmland alone. He said farmers need reliable access to practical knowledge, climate information and professional advisory support. Kyari said Nigeria is expanding digital extension services through climate advisory text messages, more than 1,000 tablet-equipped digital agents and desk officers across the 774 local government areas. A new platform is also expected to communicate with farmers in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and Pidgin. He noted that extension services remain underfunded, with some officers serving up to 10,000 farmers. The government is also working on an Agricultural Extension Bill to address fragmented service delivery and strengthen support for farmers, including women and young people.
