Doctors Remove Needle Near Chinese Man’s Heart After Scans Reveal Others in His Body
A 35-year-old man in China sought treatment after experiencing pain while urinating and blood in his urine. Scans later revealed several needle-like metallic objects in different parts of his body, including his chest, abdomen, pelvis and urinary tract. Doctors were most concerned about a corroded sewing needle that had pierced the sac surrounding his heart. Surgeons removed the needle successfully, but chose to monitor the other objects because immediate removal could cause further complications. The man had previously undergone surgery to remove foreign objects from his abdomen. Doctors suspect the case may involve self-embedding, a rare form of non-suicidal self-injury. At a nine-month follow-up, he was reported to be clinically stable and his heart function had improved.
