Pioneering Black US Air Force Pilot Theresa Claiborne Retires After 43 Years
Captain Theresa M. Claiborne has retired after 43 years in aviation. She made history as the first Black female pilot in the US Air Force before joining United Airlines in 1990. Her final landing at Newark Liberty International Airport ended a 34-year career with the airline. Claiborne also co-founded Sisters of the Skies, a nonprofit that supports aspiring Black women pilots through mentorship and scholarships. She says she plans to keep inspiring young people to pursue their goals and break barriers in aviation. Her career highlights the financial and structural obstacles that still limit access to pilot training for many people of colour.
