US Restricts Visa Waiver Program for Travelers with Certain Travel Histories
The US government has updated its Visa Waiver Program rules. Citizens from participating countries who visited or hold dual nationality with designated nations must now apply for a standard Visitor Visa instead of using the visa-free scheme. Under the updated guidelines, anyone who traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011, and those who visited Cuba after January 12, 2021, are excluded. Dual nationals of Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan or Syria also lose eligibility. Limited exceptions exist for official diplomatic or military travel. All other eligible visitors still need a valid ESTA approval and a biometric passport for stays of up to 90 days.
